Wait…That Counts as Literacy?

Be honest. When you hear that September is Rotary's Basic Education and Literacy Month, what's the first thing that pops into your head?

But you can know how to read perfectly well and still have no idea what your credit card company means by APR. You can have a college degree and struggle to determine whether a loan is actually a good deal. And just about anyone can look at a suspicious email and wonder, "Is this a scam, or do I really need to click that link?"

Literacy is a whole lot bigger than reading. It's having the knowledge and confidence to navigate everyday life—and sometimes the things we assume "everybody knows" are exactly the things nobody ever taught us.

That's why I'm excited to ask you to register for our District 7120 Literacy Seminar: Building Financial Confidence on Saturday, September 26 in Clifton Springs. We'll explore ways Rotarians can help people in our communities become more financially confident through conversations, projects and partnerships.

Last month, I challenged you to ask a question you didn't already know the answer to…and really listen. This month let's flip that around: Share something you know. 

Maybe that's financial knowledge. Maybe it's a professional skill. Maybe it's something you've learned through years of Rotary service. Share it with a newer member, your club or someone in your community who could benefit from it.

And if you're looking for a place to share your talents, District 7120 needs you, too. 

Our Membership Committee is seeking members and chairs for its Membership Attraction Subcommittee. Our Public Image Committee needs people with communications, AI, graphic design, photography and video skills. We're also looking for Rotarians interested in helping rethink and redesign our district website. You don't need to know everything.
