From the District Literacy Committee:
“Literacy” – whenever anyone says that word, many of us envision a child with a book in his hands learning to read. But literacy covers many other skills besides imprinted words and children. There is comprehension, usage and related numbers. Numbers? Yes, in planning a budget, balancing the checkbook, or reading a notice from the bank, you need to comprehend the words next to the numbers. What comes to mind when someone says “illiterate”? A person with disabilities? A refugee who doesn’t speak English? Someone who cannot express his needs in a way that you can understand? Someone who cannot understand the notices that provide safety for the family. Someone who cannot read or write?
Rotary can promote literacy for persons of any age, income, or abilities. The mission statement of the District Literacy Committee is to encourage and provide ways for clubs to address the many facets of literacy. Sessions at the annual Literacy Seminar or the sessions at the District Training
